Basic Rules of Badminton
Court & Equipment
- Rectangular court divided by a net
- Badminton racket and shuttlecock (birdie)
- Net height: 1.55m at the posts, 1.524m at the center
Scoring System
- Matches are played best of 3 games
- Each game is played to 21 points
- Rally scoring: a point is scored on every rally
- Must win by 2 points (cap at 30)
Serve Rules
- Serve must be underarm
- Shuttle must be hit below the server’s waist
- Racket shaft must point downward
- Serve diagonally into the opponent’s service court
- Server and receiver must have both feet stationary inside their service courts
Gameplay Rules
- Shuttle must pass over the net
- A side may hit the shuttle only once before it crosses the net
- Shuttle is out if it lands outside the boundary lines
- Shuttle touching the net but landing in is still in play
Singles vs Doubles
- Singles: long and narrow court for serving, full court for rallies
- Doubles: wider court, shorter service court
- Players rotate service positions when points are won
